The Historic Apollo School Restoration
Rehabilitation of the badly neglected former two-room schoolhouse began in 2000 and continued until the building was formally reopened in 2014. This video is a snapshot in time made at the beginning of the project and introduces just some of the community members and businesses without whose generous help this project would not have been successful.
Historically Speaking Oral Histories
The first speakers in our ongoing “Historically Speaking” oral histories project are long-time Hobe Sounders Art Ondich, Merriam Marr Holt, Zelda Marr Hopkins and Kathy Falk Spurgeon. We are encouraging anyone who wants to share their old or not-so-old memories of growing up in Hobe Sound to Send us a Message.

Preservationist of the Year - Kathy Spurgeon
“The rehabilitation of what we now call the Historic Apollo School has been my principal avocation for the past 25 years. My selection as the Martin County Historic Preservation Board’s Preservationist of the Year for 2024 recognized not only my ongoing efforts but also those of the members of the Apollo School Foundation board and the community who have been instrumental in helping us preserve the century-old iconic building and keep it open. I am honored to be the latest recipient of this prestigious award and humbled to be in the esteemed company of those whose work has been recognized previously. It has been said that “preservationists save the world one building at a time”, and this group spends the time, energy, and precious capital to see that we do all we can to save our little corner of the world.” (Spurgeon - 2024)
